Hell Hole is a Shudder Original horror movie with creature-feature horror movie vibes. The movie has traditional monster movie elements with cheesy 80’s horror comedy. Set in the Serbian wilderness, the story follows a fracking crew who accidentally awaken a French solider with a secret inside- a parasitic monster. The gore and effects of this movie was good and gave a good mix of campy/cheesy 80’s old-school horror influences, like Night of the Creeps, Night of the Comet and Critters.
The plot had a unique take on body invasion horror, with a focus on male bodies as sites of horror, flipping the usual gender roles seen in similar films. Despite its gruesome premise, the film doesn’t take itself too seriously, but has lighthearted moments.
I liked the movie, the Serbian woods added to the creepy factor-this location should be utilized more. The acting was ok but the plot needs more work and a better explanation of the creature and where it came from. This movie is best suited for fans of 80’s retro-style horror who appreciate a mix of thrills, dark humor, and of course gore.
