The Hangman, is a supernatural horror movie that follows Leon, a father searching for his missing son in the mountains of West Virginia.
The setting is rich in horror potential, with a demonic entity called The Hangman and a cult serving as the primary supernatural threats sounds great so far but, the first half of the movie focuses on Leon’s encounters with backwoods criminals and racists, which detracts from the horror narrative. While the second half of the movie brings the cult and demonic elements back into focus, the story and the slow pace of the movie really made me lose interest.
The lead performance by LeJon Woods, who also co-wrote the screenplay, added depth and some humor to the story, but the movie suffers from too many themes, including racism and familial forgiveness, without fully developing any of them.
The Hangman offers moments of intrigue and good performances, it falls short of fully capitalizing on its supernatural premise. Please do not focus on racism, this is a horror movie keep true to the genre. The Hangman is available on Amazon, Tubi, Apple TV and VOD platforms.
