The NYC St.Patrick’s Day Parade is on March 17, 2025 (Monday) starting at 11am
The NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade stands as one of the most cherished traditions in New York City. The inaugural parade took place on March 17, 1762, a full fourteen years before the United States Declaration of Independence was signed. It featured a group of homesick Irish exiles and Irish soldiers serving in the British Army stationed in the New York colonies. During that era, wearing green was a symbol of Irish pride, yet it was prohibited in Ireland. At that 1762 parade, participants enjoyed the liberty to speak in Irish, wear green attire, sing Irish songs, and play pipes to tunes that held deep meaning for the Irish immigrants of that period.
Today, the NYC Parade makes its way along 5th Avenue, where it is observed from the steps of St. Patrick’s Cathedral by His Eminence, Timothy Cardinal Dolan, the Archbishop of New York. This tradition of passing by St. Patrick’s Cathedral has remained the same since it started, except for the location. In its early days, the Parade would pass by the Old St. Patrick’s Cathedral, now a Basilica, situated at the intersection of Mott and Prince Streets in SoHo. Currently, the Parade kicks off at 44th Street and 5th Avenue at 11 a.m. and continues up to 79th Street. Throughout the day, millions of spectators gather along the Parade route to join in the celebration.
