The History of the Museum Mile Festival

Launched in 1978 to boost public recognition of its member establishments and encourage support for the arts, the Museum Mile Festival has become a template for similar events worldwide. This successful collaboration includes eight institutions: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Neue Galerie New York, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, The Jewish Museum, Museum of the City of New York, El Museo del Barrio, and The Africa Center. Additionally, several neighborhood collaborators such as the New York Academy of Medicine, the Church of the Heavenly Rest, Asia Society, 92NY, Institute for the Study of the Ancient World, NYC Kids Project, The People’s Bus, and AKC Museum of the Dog will participate in the festivities.

Museum of the City of New York, El Museo del Barrio, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art are part of the Cultural Institutions Group (CIG), a varied alliance of 34 nonprofit museums, performing arts venues, historical societies, zoos, and botanical gardens in New York that maintain a private-public partnership with the City and occupy City-owned properties.
