Here, the play diverges from the Netflix series. In the show, Henry Creel is introduced around the age of 12, suggesting he was born around 1947. Meanwhile, Joyce Byers (formerly Maldonado) and Jim Hopper were born around 1941-42.
In the play, Henry Creel starts school alongside Joyce Maldonado (Byers), Jim Hopper, and… Bob Newby? By using younger versions of the show’s main characters, the play attempts to connect its cast with the audience. However, this would alter the show’s established canon. In “First Shadow,” they all participate in a high school play, and the mystery unfolds when local pets start dying under strange circumstances. Jim Hopper, Joyce Maldonado (Byers), and Bob Newby investigate. This doesn’t align with the TV show’s storyline. No further details will be revealed to avoid spoilers.
Despite the questionable timeline when comparing the TV show and the Broadway play as canon, the performances are strong, and the stage designs are incredible. However, a weak story and a disengaging finale leave you feeling unsatisfied and almost deceived.
If you enjoy fancy lighting and impressive stage effects, I moderately recommend seeing this play. If you’re a devoted fan of the Netflix series Stranger Things, you might find yourself puzzled. Should you watch this play? Of course, you’re a Stranger Things fan.
