Since 1983, countless New Yorkers and tourists from all over the globe have flocked to the shores of Coney Island for the annual Mermaid Parade hosted by Coney Island USA. Drawing inspiration from the historic Coney Island Mardi Gras parades, participants have reimagined the Mermaid Parade as a unique community festivity. By the late 1980s, it had become a top “must-see” event in New York and is undeniably recognized as the official kickoff to the city’s summer season.
