Duration: Each kayaking session lasts 20 minutes within a protected embayment marked by buoys, but you can get back in line for additional sessions if it’s not busy. If others are waiting, you’re asked to return after 20 minutes.
Cost: Completely free, no reservations required. The program is run by volunteers and funded by donations, so contributions are appreciated to keep it running.
No Reservations: Kayaking is first-come, first-served. Arrive early, especially on weekends, as wait times can range from no wait to over an hour depending on weather and crowd size. Lines may close early if busy (e.g., by 3:00 p.m.).
Waiver: All participants must sign a liability waiver before kayaking. You can complete it on-site or in advance via the Downtown Boathouse website to save time (though it’s not a reservation).
Equipment Provided: The Boathouse supplies sit-on-top kayaks (single or double), paddles, life jackets, lockers with locks, sunblock, changing rooms, and first aid equipment.
Rules:You must know how to swim.
Participants under 18 need a parent or guardian present; those under 13 must paddle in a double kayak with an adult.
Stay within the buoy-marked embayment to avoid river currents and boat traffic.
No swimming in the river, and return if called back by volunteers.
Groups are limited to 10 people to avoid overwhelming the program. Larger groups (e.g., youth or nonprofit organizations) should email: groups@downtownboathouse.org for arrangements.
No animals are allowed in kayaks for safety reasons.
Safety and Instruction: Volunteers provide basic paddling instructions, help with life vests, and ensure safe kayaking in the embayment. No prior experience is needed, making it beginner-friendly. Free lessons are offered on Wednesdays from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Pier 26.
Accessibility: The program is open to all ages and skill levels, with volunteers ensuring a safe and inclusive experience. The boathouse is part of Hudson River Park’s mission to provide public access to NYC’s waterways.
Other Activities: The Downtown Boathouse occasionally offers free three-hour guided trips to the open Hudson River on Saturdays at 8:00 a.m. for those who’ve completed skills training. They also host training workshops and volunteer appreciation events.
Facilities: Changing rooms, lockers, and a rinse-off station are available, as kayaks may have water in the seat (bring a swimsuit or clothes that can get wet).
Environmental Focus: The program highlights the improved cleanliness of the Hudson River, encouraging environmental stewardship and appreciation of NYC’s harbor ecosystem.
Arrive Early: To minimize wait times, aim to arrive before noon on weekends or earlier on weekdays. Last boats go out 30 minutes before closing.
What to Bring: Wear water-resistant clothing and footwear (you’ll likely get wet). Bring a change of clothes, as there are changing booths. Lockers are available for valuables, but avoid bringing items like phones unless you’re confident in your paddling skills.
Donations: While free, donations help sustain the volunteer-run program.
Nearby Amenities: Pier 26 also has a multi-purpose sports field, lounge chairs, and City Vineyard for post-kayaking relaxation.
