The Animal Care Centers of New York (ACC) is facing an unprecedented crisis. As of July 2025, the shelters are caring for over a thousand animals—far beyond their intended capacity. For the first time in three decades, the centers have been forced to suspend new pet intakes, as they simply have no more space. This overcrowding is rooted in larger economic challenges: the cost of veterinary care has surged nearly 39 percent in the past five years, and pet food prices have jumped almost 26 percent. Many residents, grappling with higher living costs and strict housing policies, have had to make the heartbreaking decision to surrender their pets. To address this crisis, the centers are urgently seeking loving foster homes and adopters. By opening your heart and home, even temporarily, you can make a life-changing difference for an animal in need and help ease the strain on these critical shelters.

ACC remains open for adoptions, drop-off of animals that require emergency medical care or that pose a public safety risk and those being dropped off by government agencies.
