Boldt Castle is a historic landmark on Heart Island in the Thousand Islands region of New York, situated in the Saint Lawrence River. Originally built as a private summer home by millionaire George C. Boldt, it was intended as a grand tribute to his wife, Louise. Construction began in 1900, with plans for a six-story, 120-room Rhineland-style castle, complete with tunnels, a powerhouse, Italian gardens, a drawbridge, and other lavish features.

Tragically, Louise died in 1904, and a heartbroken Boldt halted construction, leaving the castle unfinished. He never returned to the island, and it remained abandoned for 73 years, exposed to weather and vandalism. In 1977, the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority acquired Heart Island and the nearby Boldt Yacht House for one dollar, with the agreement to use all revenue for restoration. Since then, over $50 million has been invested in restoring the castle, including its stained glass dome, marble floors, grand staircase, and various rooms. Today, it’s a major tourist attraction, open from mid-May to mid-October, accessible by ferry or tour boat from Alexandria Bay, Clayton, or Canadian ports like Gananoque.

Visitors can explore restored areas on the first and second floors, while upper floors feature exhibits on the Gilded Age and the castle’s history. The island also includes notable structures like the Power House, Alster Tower, and a stone gazebo. The Boldt Yacht House, showcasing antique boats, requires an additional fee. The castle is a U.S. Port of Entry, so visitors from Canada need proper identification. It’s also a popular wedding venue and has appeared in the 1981 film Fear No Evil. The site is handicap-accessible, with dining and picnic areas, but lacks climate control.

Admission (castle only) costs $13.50 for adults and $9.50 for children (5-12), with infants free.

Admission for both Boldt Castle and the Boldt Castle Yacht House. Adult – $16.50 (13+ years) Child – $9.50 (5-12 years) Infant – $0.00 (4 years and under)
