Nestled in Saugerties, New York, Opus 40 stands as Harvey Fite’s life’s work—a monumental 6.5-acre bluestone labyrinth crafted entirely by hand over nearly four decades. This sprawling sculpture garden features intricate terraces, winding ramps, serene pools, and a towering nine-ton monolith, all assembled without mortar in a technique inspired by ancient Mayan craftsmanship.

The bluestone surfaces require careful navigation—please refrain from running, climbing, or jumping. Those with mobility or vision impairments may find the terrain challenging; companion assistance is recommended. Children must remain supervised, though they’ll enjoy the dedicated play area and stone-building station. Don’t miss the Quarryman’s Museum with its collection of vintage tools. Most visitors spend 1-2 hours exploring the site.

The calendar features diverse offerings—from Sun Ra Arkestra performances to theatrical productions, yoga sessions, and specialized workshops in drystone techniques and birdwatching. Consult the website for upcoming events. Picnics are welcome (bring your own blanket or use provided tables). Only service animals permitted. The site remains open in inclement weather, closing only during dangerous conditions with full refund.

Located at 356 George Sickle Road in Saugerties. Personal vehicles recommended as public transit options are limited (Rhinecliff-Kingston Amtrak station is approximately 15-20 minutes distant).

NOTE: Appropriate footwear essential for navigating the uneven pathways. Enhance your visit by exploring nearby attractions like Saugerties Lighthouse or Woodstock. Monitor weather forecasts and event listings before arrival. Note that narrow access roads are unsuitable for recreational vehicles.

The internet may call Opus 40, “America’s Stonehenge”, but there are actual Stonehenge replicas throughout the United States (outside of New York). Regardless, the craftsmanship and mountain vistas offer something for everyone.

The park welcomes guests Thursday through Monday (April-November), 10 AM to 5 PM, with final entry at 4 PM. Prices at time of this post – Purchase tickets in advance to guarantee entry: adults $11, seniors/students/veterans $9, children under 5 $5 (door prices slightly higher).
