It’s the largest Halloween parade in the country, featuring tens of thousands of costumed participants, giant puppets, marching bands, dancers, stilt walkers, and theatrical performances.

HISTORY:

Started in 1973 as a block party for kids by puppeteer Ralph Lee, it exploded in the 1980s under artist Jeanne Fleming (organizer since 1986). By 1977, it had 250,000 participants and has grown into a major spectacle drawing up to 2 million spectators. It’s produced by the nonprofit Village Halloween Parade, Inc., supported by NYC’s Department of Cultural Affairs. The 2025 edition marks its 52nd year and emphasizes community and creativity.

THEME and HIGHLIGHTS:

  • 2025 Theme: “We saved you a seat…” (also described as “It’s a Potluck!” or “Imagine! ALL the People”), celebrating community, abundance, and connection, tying into Halloween’s harvest festival roots. It envisions the parade as a shared gathering where everyone has a place at the table.

  • Features: Over 50,000 marchers in elaborate costumes, hundreds of giant puppets and Halloween characters, dozens of live bands from around the world, jugglers, break dancers, and special effects like professional lighting and stage designs.

PARTICIPATE or ATTEND:

  • Joining the Parade: Free and open to everyone in costume—no registration needed. Meet at Sixth Avenue between Spring and Broome Streets (approach from the east or south to avoid road closures). Only costumed participants are allowed; motorized vehicles are limited and pre-approved only for safety reasons.
  • Spectating: Free along the route. For comfort, book a spot at a restaurant or bar on Sixth Avenue. New for 2025: Ticketed VIP viewing areas for skip-the-line access (details via official site).
  • Costume Tips: Go bold and creative—NYC-themed ideas include Statue of Liberty ghouls or subway zombies. Prizes for best costumes include show tickets.
  • Accessibility: The parade is family-friendly but crowded; expect stairs and uneven streets.

DIRECTIONS:

  • Transportation: Use mass transit—subway lines A/C/E to Spring St., A/B/C/D/E/F/M to West 4th St., or 1 to Houston/Christopher St./14th St. Buses on Sixth Avenue are rerouted from ~6:00 PM until cleanup; taxis/Ubers will be gridlocked.
  • Road Closures: Sixth Avenue closed from ~6:00 PM; Spring, Dominick, and Little Broome Streets blocked off.
  • Weather/Safety: Proceeds rain or shine—bring layers. High-energy crowds; stay hydrated and mindful of limited visibility in costumes.
