What is the New York grape pie?
Grape pie is made from Concord grapes with their sweet-tart flavor and grape-jelly aroma. These slip-skin grapes, whose thick skins easily separate from the pulp, flourish in the Finger Lakes region of New York where the dessert remains a regional specialty. The grape pie was made popular in New York during the 1960s, by Naples (NY) local, Irene Bouchard (often called the “Grape Pie Queen”) by sharing her recipe with a local restaurant owner, turning it into a local sensation.
The Naples Grape Festival, which is an annual two-day event every September, is held in the village of Naples, New York (known as the heart of the Finger Lakes region). Established in 1961, it celebrates the local grape harvest, particularly the Concord grapes that the area is known for, and has earned Naples the nickname “Grape Pie Capital of the World.”
