The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade primarily features giant balloons (like characters from cartoons and movies) being inflated the day before, along with some preview of the floats. (Floats themselves aren’t “inflated” like balloons, but you can see them assembled in the same area.) This event is officially called the Macy’s Balloon Inflation & Float Viewing, and it’s a free public tradition.

• Date: Wednesday, November 26, 2025 (Thanksgiving Eve).
• Time: Public viewing from approximately 12 PM or 1 PM to 6 PM (lines often start forming at noon).
• Location: Upper West Side, around the American Museum of Natural History (streets between 77th and 81st, from Central Park West to Columbus Avenue).
• Entrance: Enter the secure checkpoint/queue at West 72nd Street & Columbus Avenue. You must be through security by 6 PM sharp—no late entries.

What To KNOW:

• It’s completely free and no tickets needed.
• Expect huge crowds and long lines—arrive early (as soon as noon) for shorter waits and better views.
• Balloons start flat and slowly fill up (best views of full inflation in the late afternoon, around 4 PM+).
• Dress warmly—it’s outdoors in late November NYC weather.
• Follow NYPD and Macy’s staff directions; there are street closures starting early in the day.
• Exits are on the west side (82nd–86th Streets).

To Watch from Home (Livestream/TV Coverage): You can usually catch a couple of YouTubers streaming the event live on their channels. NBC/Peacock airs a (pre-recorded) primetime special called “Countdown to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade” that includes behind-the-scenes footage from the inflation area which airs on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, at 8 PM ET on NBC and streaming on Peacock.

This event is often less crowded than the actual parade on Thanksgiving Day (November 27) and lets you get super close to the massive balloons—many people say it’s even more fun! If you’re in NYC, definitely go in person.
